    @sandrob….

the answer is propagation delay bcoz wen a packet travels from one hop to another hop the propagation delay comes into picture which depicts variable network delay… the processing, serializing and all other delay’s are constrained to source(processors or links)…..

correct me if i m wrong….thank you guys..

Delay issues: Delay isthe time that ittakes for a packet toreach the receiving endpoint
after being transmitted from the sending endpoint. This time iscalled the “end-to-end
delay.” and consists of two components:
    — Fixed networkdelay: Two types of fixed delays areserialization and propagation
delays. Serialization isthe process of placing bits onthe circuit. The higher the
circuit speed, the less time it takes to place the bits onthe circuit. Therefore, the
higher the speed ofthe link, the less serialization delay isincurred. Propagation
delay is the time that il lakes for frames to transit the physical media.
    — Variable network delay: Processing delay is a type of variabledelay, and is the
time required for a networking device to look uptheroute, change the header, and
complete other switching tasks. Insome cases, thepacket must also be
manipulated—for example, when the encapsulation type orthe hop count must be
changed. Each of these steps can contribute to theprocessing delay.

According to the Cisco site all of these can be found as fixed delays accept processing. Using the process of elimination it has to be processing. From the cisco site it says “In general, the fixed components are from propagation delays on the trunks within the network, and variable delays are from queuing delays clocking frames into and out of intermediate switches.” Also referred to as processing. Also, another test document I have lists processing as the answer as well.

Compressed RTP (CR) – Used when the IP, UDP, and RTP headers remain consistent. All three headers are compressed.

    about q2:
regarding to cisco press, there are 2 types of network delay: fixed and variable. As exampled of fixed, it names serialization and propagation delays; and it says that processing delay is a type of variable delay and “is the time required for a networking device to look up the route, change the header, and complete other switching tasks.”
So, the answer to question 2 is, regarding to cisco press, C.

Question 2: Which network component would cause variable network delay?

    Answer E. propagation delay

I have been mulling over this one and I fear it is one of those “misleading” leading questions.

The question specifically refers to Network Component.

    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk652/tk698/technologies_white_paper09186a00800a8993.shtml

    “Network Switching Delay

The public frame relay or ATM network that interconnects the endpoint locations is the source of the largest delays for voice connections. Network Switching Delays (ωn) are also the most difficult to quantify.

If wide-area connectivity is provided by Cisco equipment, or some other private network, it is possible to identify the individual components of delay. In general, the fixed components are from propagation delays on the trunks within the network, and variable delays are from queuing delays clocking frames into and out of intermediate switches.”

In addition, refer to Tables: Table 6 .1: Single Hop Delay Calculation, Table 6.2: Two Hop Public Network Delay Calculation with Router/Gateway Tandem etc.

    It implies the following:

    A. dejitter buffer – FIXED
    B. DSP delay – (Referred to as Coder Delay) FIXED
    C. processing delay – (Referred to as Coder Delay) FIXED
    D. serialization delay – FIXED
    E. propagation delay – (Referred to as Network Delay) FIXED & VARIABLE

    Please Discuss

I wrote the above comment and after further research and referring back to my ICOMM materials I have been left iscouraged.

ICOMM V8.0 1-53 “Variable network delay: Processng delay is a type of variable delay”

^ This was originally my gut response. It seems the logical answer.

About Q2, according to the ciscopress article below, none of the answers are correct.. But If I have to choose one, I would select letter E (propagation delay) as @Anonymous explained.

    Latency

End-to-end delay, or latency, between any given sender and receiver comprises two types of delay:

Fixed-network delay—Includes encoding and decoding time and the latency required for the electrical and optical signals to travel the media en route to the receiver. Generally, applying QoS does not affect fixed-network delay because fixed-network delay is a property of the medium. Upgrading to higher-speed media such as 10 Gigabit Ethernet and newer network hardware with lower encoding and decoding delays, depending on application, may result in lower fixed-network delay.

Variable-network delay—Refers to the network conditions, such as congestion, that affect the overall latency of a packet in transit from source to destination. Applying QoS does affect the variable-network delay.

In brief, the following list details the types of delay that induce end-to-end latency (note that the first four types of delay are fixed delay):

Packetization delay—Amount of time that it takes to segment, sample, and encode signals, process data, and turn the data into packets.

Serialization delay—Amount of time that it takes to place the bits of a packet, encapsulated in a frame, onto the physical media.

Propagation delay—Amount of time it takes to transmit the bits of a frame across the physical wire.

Processing delay—Amount of time it takes for a network device to take the frame from an input interface, place it into a receive queue, and place it into the output queue of the output interface.

Queuing delay—Amount of time a packet resides in the output queue of an interface.

Of all the delay types listed, queuing is the delay over which you have the most control with QoS features in Cisco IOS. The other types of delay are not directly affected by QoS configurations. For this reason, this chapter focuses mostly on queuing delay.

If wide-area connectivity is provided by Cisco equipment, or some other private network, it is possible to identify the individual components of delay. In general, the fixed components are from propagation delays on the trunks within the network, and variable delays are from queuing delays clocking frames into and out of intermediate switches. In order to estimate propagation delay, a popular estimate of 10 microseconds/mile or 6 microseconds/km (G.114) is widely used. However, intermediate multiplexing equipment, backhauling, microwave links, and other factors found in carrier networks create many exceptions.

    2. Outbound dial-peer matching is completed on a digit-by-digit basis.
    Q5 Drag & drop
    1. Start -> Define Problem -> Gather Facts -> Consider Possibilities -> Create Action Plan -> Implement Action Plan -> Observe Results -> Ultilize Process
